As we enter the final months of the 2024–2025 legislative session — and NJ Governor Murphy’s final months in office — we have a crucial opportunity to make history. Clean Water Action and our allies at the EmpowerNJ Coalition are launching a new initiative to rally local elected officials across New Jersey in support of the Climate Superfund Act.
This landmark legislation will make corporate polluters pay their fair share for the escalating costs of climate damage — protecting our towns, taxpayers, and future generations.
Here’s how you can help:
- We’re organizing 200 mayors and councilmembers to sign a letter to Senate President Scutari, Assembly Speaker Coughlin, and Governor Murphy, urging them to pass and sign the Climate Superfund Act before the end of this year.
- Ask your elected officials to join this growing coalition of leaders defending New Jersey’s communities from worsening climate impacts. Together, we can ensure polluters—not the public—pay for the damage they’ve caused. Let’s make the Climate Superfund Act law in 2025! Please fill out this form and we will help you contact your local Mayor and Councilmembers. We've also included a sample email you can send to them below.

Dear [Mayor/Councilmember] [Last Name],
I hope this message finds you well. I’m reaching out on behalf of Clean Water Action and EmpowerNJ, a coalition of more than 150 environmental, labor, faith, and community organizations working to protect New Jersey’s residents and economy from the growing impacts of climate change.
As you know, communities across New Jersey are already bearing the cost of flooding, extreme heat, and other climate impacts that damage our infrastructure and threaten public health. Meanwhile, the fossil fuel companies most responsible for these damages continue to profit without contributing to the costs of recovery and resilience.
That’s why we’re asking you to join a growing coalition of local elected officials across New Jersey by signing onto a letter to Senate President Scutari, Assembly Speaker Coughlin, and Governor Murphy in support of the NJ Climate Superfund Act (S4239/A4386).
This critical legislation would:
- Hold corporate polluters financially accountable for their share of the damages caused by climate change.
- Ensure New Jersey taxpayers and local governments are not left to shoulder these mounting costs alone.
- Provide much-needed funding for infrastructure, flood protection, and community resilience projects statewide.
We are hoping to organize at least 200 local leaders from across the state to demonstrate broad, bipartisan support for this initiative. Your voice as a local leader will send a powerful message to Trenton that New Jersey communities are united in demanding corporate accountability and climate justice.
