Who's ready to MOP Up Michigan?

Hello voters and citizens of Michigan! My name is Olivia Thompson and I am an aspiring writer/journalist in the Ann Arbor area. I go to WAVE (Washtenaw Alliance for Virtual Education) in Ypsilanti. Are you ready to MOP up Michigan? In the recent months we have seen the government abuse their power all over America. This has not only impacted the adults but also the young people in the world, including me. MMOP (Michiganders for Money Out of Politics) is here to change that.

Our mission is to spread awareness of the way big businesses have funded and turned the tides of different elections towards their own personal gain. Businesses like DTE have spread confusing and false ads to try to distract us from behind the scene work which continues to fill their pockets. MMOP stands up to big businesses, and you can too - because the government should work for the people, not the powerful corporations.

This is a call to action. You have so much more power then you know. If you have felt angry with the way life has been going, then this organization is for you. There are so many positive things this foundation has already accomplished. For example: In August 2025, the Michigan Board of State Canvassers approved the summary and form for their petition. This is an amazing first step in getting MMOP on the 2026 ballot. After that approval, we are now in the phase of gathering signatures in order to qualify for the 2026 ballot.

MMOP is organizing volunteer training for petition circulators, town halls, orientations, and other events to spread the word. This is one of the ways that you can help! We are always looking for new people to help collect petitions. If you love interacting people or just being a part of a supportive group that wants to make the world a better place, this could be a great fit for you!

A little bit more about me: I am a nature person. I've always been drawn to the outdoors, the sun, the grass, the birds make me feel at home in this big world. I have pretty strong anxiety and when I was approached by the organization, I was not prepared to jump right into petitions. That's okay! I met with a lovely woman named Madison and together we came up with alternatives to ways I could help. For example, we need volunteers to input data into our systems! We also need people to help create signs that we can take to events that add a pop of color. And, we need people to help organize and prepare petitions for pick up, so that after they've been signed we can put them into bundles and prepare them for data entry. Finally, micro-circulation and getting petition signatures from friends and family - every signature brings us closer to the ballot!

There's so many creative ways you can help and we are always open to your ideas! When they asked how I wanted to help and I brought up my interest in journalism, they gave me this wonderful opportunity. I was over the moon with excitement.

This organization brings together so many different parts of Michigan. For example some organizations they are in close contact with are Clean Water Action, Detroit Action, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan United Action, MOSES Action, Voters Not Politicians, Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition, Climate Cabinet, Progress Michigan, Detroit Jews for Justice, and more.

Any of these stand out to you? For me, keeping the environment safe has always been a priority. Some day I want to go backpacking across the world, but if we don't act soon, a lot of our beautiful nature will be damaged or destroyed. Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition really draws me in because they are making sure that we take care of our greenery and that's very important to me and the message I am trying to share in the world.

This has been a hard year for me and my family. We've lost a lot this year. Under the Trump administration people across the country have watched their rights and protections and even freedom get taken away. I personally know I have felt alone, isolated and scared. However, pushing myself out of my comfort zone and taking part in this organization has really shined a light on my life and motivated me to prove to the world and myself that I am so much more than what people expect from me.

I hope this article can help shed some light on MMOP and let you get to know me better! Thank you for reading, and I hope this convinces you to help us MOP Up Michigan because democracy should never be for sale. If you are interested, please do not hesitate to reach out. We can't wait to hear from you!
