Diesel Truck Pollution is Choking NJ Communities

The trucks you see on highways and in our neighborhoods, driving to and from ports and warehouse facilities, serve as the lifelines for local economies, businesses, workers, and consumers who shop online. However, this all comes at a painful cost for both public health and the environment.

The communities most impacted by New Jersey’s diesel truck pollution are those living close to ports and warehouse facilities. These facilities often require large fleets of freight trucks to transport goods to clients across the state. These neighborhoods see constant truck traffic, often from outdated diesel-powered vehicles that release dangerous co-pollutants like Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), Nitrogen Oxide (NOₓ), and Particulate Matter (PM2.5). Over time, this exposure contributes to asthma, heart disease, and other serious health issues.

The NJ ISR Bill: A Chance to Protect Our Health and Environment

In June 2024, NJ lawmakers introduced the Indirect Source Review (ISR) Bill (A4679/S3545), a critical step toward holding the freight and warehouse industry accountable. That same month, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) released the NJ Warehouse Proximity Report, highlighting how the growing number of warehouses near homes and schools is putting communities at greater risk from truck pollution.

How passing the NJ ISR Bill A4679/S3545 benefits our communities:

  • Improves air quality and health, especially for NJ’s overburdened communities
  • Reduces chronic exposure to air pollutants for freight and goods movement workers
  • Generates cost-savings (e.g. lower fuel costs) for trucking companies who commit to transitioning to zero-emission infrastructure

Since the bill was introduced, truck traffic and pollution have increased, warehouse development keeps getting approved, air quality has worsened, and the current administration has threatened both federal clean air protections and states’ ability to regulate them.
